  • AbstractThese records detail the planning and execution of the Commemorative Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Topeka Board of Education on May 17, 2004, hosted by Chicago State University. The collection includes financial records, programs, research notes, newspaper clippings, two CDs and a computer hard drive.

The Illinois Commission on the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education was formed to plan and organize a commemorative celebration of that event. Its co-chairs were Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, Jr. and Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Michael J. Madigan. The executive director was Ollie McLemore. The commemorative celebration was held May 17, 2004 at Chicago State University and the program included a reenactment of the legal arguments presented to the Supreme Court in 1954 and the decision proclaimed, as well as a panel discussion entitled, “50 Years Later…Where Are We Now?” The roundtable included Barbara Sizemore, Arnette Hubbard, Mattie Hunter, Antonio Mora, and other legal and academic experts.
