Ars Musica Chicago was founded in 1986, and at that time was named the American Medieval Players. In 1992, the name was changed to Ars Musica Chicago. Their mission is to present concerts of music from the 12th through the 18th century in a historically informed manner. In addition to musical performances, Ars Musica Chicago engages in educational and outreach activities, including workshops, Gallery 37 projects for the city of Chicago, and concerts at various locations in Illinois. The organization strives to highlight rare music in their performances, including little-known composers and lost works. There are approximately 10 core performers, and each performance centers on a particular theme, such as Hispanic and Afro-Brazilian music traditions. One of the founding board members, Enrique Alberto Arias, was a professor at DePaul University's School for New Learning, and he aided in organizing performances for Ars Musica Chicago at the DePaul University Concert Hall and St. Vincent de Paul Church. DePaul University professors Jeffery Wasson and Simone Zurawski have also served on the Board of Directors.
