Chicago area photographer.

Born in 1955, William Frederking earned a B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame in 1977 and a MFA in photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1983. He joined Columbia College Chicago in 1983 as an instructor in the photography department. From 2008 – 2012 he served as the Associate Dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts and then as an Interim Associate Dean in 2015. He retired from Columbia College Chicago in May 2017.

Frederking also works a professional photographer and has served as a visiting artist at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Milwaukee Institute for the Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His photographs have been exhibited at galleries throughout Chicago and Illinois and are held in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago, and the State of Illinois Museum in Springfield, Illinois. He is also the recipient of a Ruth Page Award, an Artist’s Fellowship Grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a Faculty Development Grant from Columbia College Chicago, and a purchase award from the State of Illinois Museum.

Frederking started to photograph dancers, dance companies, and dances in 1990 and continues to do so in retirement.

Black and white photographs of Chicago area dance companies and dancers taken by professional photographer William Frederking. He started to photograph dance companies and dancers in 1990, and continues to do so today into his retirement. Photographs include live shots, rehearsal shots, promotional shots, and studio shots. In addition to the dance photographs there are also publicity materials such as brochures, fliers, etc. related to the dance companies and dancers he photographed that used his photos for their promotional use. There are also some personal materials such as correspondence, information about his photography exhibitions, and sales.
