Philip Stanger (b. 1933) is a drummer and drum instructor, who taught for many years at Frank's Drum Shop in Chicago before relocating to California, where he continues to teach.

The Philip Stanger Collection is divided into five series: Series I, Photographs and Publications; Series II, Drum and Timpani Music; Series III, Xylophone and Marimba Music; Series IV, Percussion and Other Music; Series V, Oversize.

Series I, Photographs and Publications, contains photographs of musicians, articles, notes, jazz publications, percussion advertisements, and organization member lists. The photographs include musicians such as Barrett Deems, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, and Roy Burns as well as early 20th century percussionists. The articles feature musicians such as Barrett Deems, Gene Krupa, and Victor Berton. The percussion advertisements are from Frank's Drum Shop, Gretsch, and Ludwig Drum Company. Also included are member lists from the Chicago Federation of Musicians.

Series II, Drum and Timpani Music, contains method and instructional books for drum and timpani technique, including books and solo music by Bobby Christian, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Gene Krupa, and Ludwig Drum Company.

Series III, Xylophone and Marimba Music, contains method and instruction books for xylophone and marimba technique, including books and solo music by Lionel Hampton, Bob Tilles, Darius Milhaud, and Clifton Williams.

Series IV, Percussion and Other Music, contains percussion and other instrumental and vocal music and instructional books, including an orchestral score of Dimitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, vocal sight singing method books, and a fake book of Latin dance rhythms.

Series V, Oversize, contains, oversize music and method books including a set of transcriptions for violin, a drum method book, a set of xylophone solos, and Karlheinz Stockhausen's Nr. 9 Zyklus.
