George Warner Hughes, Jr. was born on November 19, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois, to George W. Hughes, Sr. and Bernice Hughes. George was married to Juanita Pitts and they had four children. He married Patricia Davis in 1982 until she died in 1989. He then married Madeline Morgan in 1993. Hughes attended McCosh Elementary School and Englewood High School.

Hughes' grandmother bought him his first set of drums and also paid for lessons. He spent his life as a jazz drummer and played with many bands and musicians including Clarence Wheeler and the Enforcers, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Della Reese, Milt Treiner, Carmen McRae, Andy Goodrich, and Eddie Johnson. Hughes appeared on the Jazz Icons "Sarah Vaughan" DVD, the film "Festival de Jazz de Montreux 1981," and Jodie Christian’s CD "Rain or Shine."

George Warner Hughes, Jr. died in 2005.

The George Warner Hughes, Jr. Collection contains a DVD interview with Hughes where he recalls memories of bands, musicians, and clubs on the South Side of Chicago. There are printouts of photographs from a compact disc which include family, Hughes playing and attending clubs and events, Hughes with friends, club ephemera, and a program from Hughes' memorial service.
