  • AbstractTerry Martin, professor, jazz author, critic, and collector. Terry Martin is a Professor in Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago. He has been involved in the Chicago jazz scene for over five decades, including as a board member and committee chair of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, participation in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, and author of liner notes and articles. The Jazz Institute of Chicago Terry Martin Papers primarily document activities of the Jazz Institute of Chicago and other Chicago jazz events, as well as a few non-Chicago events and organizations, and contain publications, record catalogs, fliers, calendars, announcements, and other ephemera of jazz events and concerts.

Terry Martin is a professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cellular Biology and The Cancer Research Center at the University of Chicago. He earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of Adelaide in 1961 and a Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge in 1966.

Martin has been involved in the Chicago jazz scene for over five decades. He wrote liner notes for artists such as Lennie Tristano, Sun Ra, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. He has contributed to publications including Jazz Monthly and the Art Pepper Companion. Martin also photographed the early scene of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.

Martin has been involved with the Jazz Institute of Chicago and is the chair of the Don DeMicheal Archives Committee, which helped create and grow the Chicago Jazz Archive at the University of Chicago Library.

Martin remains involved in the Jazz Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Jazz Festival.

The Jazz Institute of Chicago Terry Martin Papers are divided into two series: Series I, Events and Professional; and Series II, Publications and Oversize. The papers primarily document activities of the Jazz Institute of Chicago and other Chicago jazz events, including a copy of the program of the first Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979, as well as a few non-Chicago events and organizations.

Series I, Events and Professional, contains correspondence, brochures, programs, newspaper articles, and ephemera. The Jazz Institute of Chicago material includes board minutes, news releases, brochures, and event ephemera. There are fliers, broadsides, announcements, articles, and slides primarily for Chicago jazz events as well as a few non-Chicago events. Also included are brochures and other ephemera for jazz organizations and archives. The correspondence is primarily about the Jazz Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Jazz Festival.

Series II, Publications and Oversize, contains newsletters, journals, record catalogs, calendars, ephemera, and an article about Chicago jazz and the Chicago Jazz Archive.
