Professor Myra Estrin Levine was a distinguished nurse and faculty member of the University of Illinois College of Nursing. One of her interests during her professional career was the assembling of an extensive collection of postage stamps depicting the history of nursing and its practitioners.

Upon the occasion of her retirement, Professor Levine gave her collection to the University Library to be known as the Myra E. Levine Nursing on Stamps Collection. It will be available for reference and study and will provide a valuable resource for investigation and scholarship.

The University Archives also holds the Myra Levine Papers.

Part of the stamp collection was exhibited at the Library of the Health Sciences in 1983.

This collection is made up of approximately 550 nursing stamps issued by countries all over the world. In addition to such historical figures as Florence Nightingale, Santa Luisa de Marillac, Jeanne Mance, and Mary Aikenhead, the collection contains stamps depicting the idealized figure of the nurse, the Red Cross, hospital and nursing situations, wartime nursing health related topics, post cards and first day covers, etc.
