This collection consists of tapes and transcripts of the interviews pertaining to Maxwell St. Market, the Near West Side neighborhood residents, Jewish immigrants, sweatshop laborers and the tenement housing collected for the book, Maxwell Street: Survival in a Bazaar.

Ira Berkow was born on January 7, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his B.A. from Miami University in 1963 and his M.A. from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 1965. He worked as a sports writer for the Minneapolis Tribune from 1965-1967, and from 1967-1976 he worked as a sports columnist and sports editor for Newspaper Enterprise Association, a syndicated news service. In March 1981 he became a sports writer for the New York Times and held that position until his retirement in 2007. Berkow has written various books throughout his career including Maxwell Street: Survival in a Bazaar. He has been an active member in the public campaign to save the Maxwell St. Marketplace.
