In 1863 the Washingtonian Home for the Cure of Inebriates opened at 547 State Street in Chicago. On January 14, 1864 the Washingtonian Home Association was organized and its first constitution was adopted.

In response to the need for a larger space, the Home relocated with the purchase of a 5-story building on West Madison Street in 1865. The Washingtonian Home of Chicago was the historic corporation chartered by legistlature of the State of Illinois in 1867. Renovations on the building were completed by 1875 and the Home could serve 100 patients, all male, at a time.

The Martha Washington Home for Women opened in 1882 at Irving Park Road and Western Avenue and was eventually renamed as the Martha Washington Hospital. The hospital continued operating until 1992.

The Washingtonian Health Care Foundation assembled and organized the records of the all the associated corporations, including the Washingtonian Home of Chicago, Martha Washington Hospital, the Washington Health Care Corporation, and MarTech Enterprises, Inc. The Foundation dissolved ca. 2011.

The records were transferred to the University of Illinois at Chicago Library by Lewis F. Matuszewich, Chair, and Vincent Saverino, Secretary, with the approval of the Board of the Washingtonian Health Care Foundation.

The collection is comprised primarily of Board of Directors and Executive Committee minutes, ca. 1934-1990. Also present are membership directories and annual meeting information, corporate records, various property records, court documents, publications, and memorabilia documenting the corporate history of the Washingtonian Home of Chicago, the Martha Washington Hospital, the Washington Health Care Corporation, and MarTech Enterprises, Inc. The collection is organized into three series: Series I: Meeting Minutes; Series II: Legal and Corporate Records; Series III: Publications.
