HOSPITES was established in 1933 to render assistance to German social work colleagues, both Jewish and Christian. Since German social workers were not assisted through funds collected to aid other professional groups, a special committee named HOSPITES was formed to aid these social workers. Many of the German social workers were subject to discrimination because of political party affiliations, trade union sympathies, sex, religion, or race. Others found their positions eliminated because the new attitude toward social work frequently resulted in a systematic breakdown of existing agencies and methods, public welfare legislation discounted or annulled, and mass organizations like the Hitler Youth Movement substituted for individualized treatment.

Membership of HOSPITES was anonymous to protect friends in Germany from possible official retaliatory measures. HOSPITES assisted German social workers in their native country, in other parts of Europe or occasionally in the United States, generally enabling them to carry on some part of their professional work or investigation and/or writing connected therewith. The funds collected for assistance was small and the services personal.

The headquarters of HOSPITES was located in New York City. There was a Chicago Committee with Jane Addams, Mollie Ray Carroll, Samuel A. Goldsmith, and Joel D. Hunter as members.

The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, receipts, Executive Committee meeting minutes, and a report. The dates of the material are 1933 to 1935.
