  • AbstractJudge Walter J. LaBuy (1889-1967) practiced law in Chicago from 1912 until his election the circuit court in 1933. Appointed to the U.S. District Court in 1944, Judge LaBuy presided over a famous antitrust case pitting the United States vs. E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company in 1954. Judge LaBuy's favorable ruling on behalf of DePont was later overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Judge LaBuy Papers include reports, correspondence, clippings, handwritten notes, memoranda, research bulletins, pamphlets, brochures, speeches, published articles and legal opinions, bound press records, jury instruction manuals, and original cartoons.

Walter J. LaBuy was born in Dodge County, Wisconsin, in 1889. He attended Beaver Dam High School and Kent College in Chicago before receiving his L.L.B. degree from DePaul University in 1912, shortly thereafter being admitted to the bar in the State of Illinois. Walter J. LaBuy served as city attorney for Chicago in 1913 and practiced law until 1933. LaBuy successfully ran for a seat on the Cook County Commission in 1930 and remained there until he was elected to the circuit court in 1933. Judge LaBuy was later appointed to the U.S. District Court in 1944. Judge Walter LaBuy ruled in favor of E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. in an antitrust case involving the company's holdings in General Motors in 1954, but his decision was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1957. The Court ruled that DuPont's 23 percent ownership of General Motors violated the Clayton Antitrust Act in that DuPont held a favored position in selling paint and fabric to the giant automaker. Judge LaBuy died on September 29, 1967.

The Judge LaBuy Papers include reports, correspondence, clippings, handwritten notes, memoranda, research bulletins, pamphlets, brochures, speeches, published articles and legal opinions. Notable holdings include draft copies of Manual on Jury Instructions in Federal Criminal Cases bound press report volumes that include clippings regarding the United States. vs. E.I. DuPont antitrust case, and original cartoons in frames.
