Dorothy (Mittelman) Sigel (1900-2000) was an actress and social activist with a long association with Hull-House. She began her acting career in 1904 at the age of four when she participated in the Hull-House theater program. She later met her husband Louis Sigel at Hull-House. Sigel was a long-time member of the Hull-House Actor's Guild and performed in Hull-House theatrical productions until she was in her sixties. During her time at Hull-House, Dorothy Sigel was heavily influenced by both Jane Addams and Edith de Nancrede, whom she considered mentors and friends. Her work outside of Hull-House is consistent with the values held by these two individuals. Sigel went on to direct and produce festival plays at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe. As a social activist for the Jewish community, Sigel did public relations and fund raising event planning for the Jewish Federation of Chicago. She also served on the boards of the Jewish United Fund and North Shore Congregation Israel and as the first president of the North Shore Chapter of Hadassah in the early 1950s.

This collection reflects Dorothy Sigel's relationship to Jane Addams, Edith de Nancrede, and the Hull-House Theater. The collection contains correspondence, minutes, pamphlets, programs, newspaper clippings, photocopied articles, photographs, and magazines containing articles about Hull-House.
