This collection has previously been known as the Jane Addams Memorial Collection, the Jane Addams Memorial Photograph Collection, or the Jane Addams Memorial Collection of Photographs. Sometimes, this collection has been referred to by the initials "JAMC."

Hull-House Photograph Collection, Special Collections and University Archives, University of Illinois at Chicago

From the early 1970s, the Special Collections Department of the University of Illinois at Chicago library collected thousands of original photographs and negatives that pertaining to Jane Addams, the Hull-House settlement house, Chicago's Near West Side, and other topics related to the history of Hull-House. This collection contains over 5,000 of the print photographs and negatives from that project. A hardcopy, folder-level index, organized topically, was prepared and updated periodically. This finding aid represents the most recent version of the folder-level description.

This collection contains over 5,000 print photographs and negatives that pertain to Jane Addams, the Hull-House settlement house, Chicago's Near West Side, and other topics related to the history of Hull-House.

This collection is organized topically into five series:

Series I, "Jane Addams": This series primarily contains photographs of Jane Addams or her friends and family.

Series II, "Hull House": This series primarily contains photographs of Hull House, of Hull House residents, of Hull House patrons, or of activities sponsored by or affiliated with Hull House.

Series III, "Bowen Country Club and the Wisconsin Camp": The photographs in this series pertain primarily to the Bowen Country Club or to the Wisconsin Work Camp, both of which were efforts to introduce city residents to life in natural areas.

Series IV, "Other Topical Groupings": This series contains photographs organized around topics different from Jane Addams, Hull House, or the Bowen Country Club and Wisconsin Work Camp. These topics are arranged alphabetically and include the following: Henry Booth Committee; Hull House Day Camp; Jane Addams Center; Parkway Community House; Senior Centers; and Toynbee Hall.

Series V, "Negatives": This series contains over 5,000 negatives, most of which correspond to a print photograph.
