  • AbstractThe Forest Preserve District of Cook County was created in 1914 with a mandate to “protect and preserve” the forests of Cook County. By 2004, the district had acquired more than 67,000 acres of forest lands. This collection contains the records of the district and other records that are relevant for the district’s history.

During the last half of the twentieth century and the first years of the twenty-first century, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County hired a news clipping service. This service reviewed most local newspapers and cut out all articles it found that mentioned the Cook County Forest Preserves. It then pasted most of these clippings onto large scrapbooks.

Two strategies were used to preserve these items. First, some newspaper clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper. Second, some newspaper clippings were digitized.

This series contains two sub-series. The first consists of the photocopied newspaper clippings, and the second consists of the digitized clippings. The digitized clippings may not be available immediately, and they may be viewed only in the reading room via an internal server.

Some items in this Series are currently being digitized to better preserve them, and they may not be immediately available. Patrons are advised to call ahead to ensure that the boxes they would like to consult will be available.
