The Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans was organized in Chicago in 1952 for individuals of Italian extraction. Its purpose was to fight discrimination and prejudice toward persons of Italian origin and to preserve and defend the good name of the Italian people. The JCCIA promoted and coordinated charitable, educational, civic, and social welfare activities through its sponsorship of more than 40 Italian American organizations throughout Chicago. Its activities included the annual Columbus Day Parade, Columbus Day as a national legal holiday, and the Italian Flood Relief Committee.
