The majority of these disputes concern the railroad brotherhoods, although some cases relate to the airlines and to manufacturing. Also included in the collection are a number of documents relating to personal injury awards.

Harold Gilden was a Chicago-based lawyer and labor arbitrator. Born in 1905, Gilden received a B.S. from the University of Illinois and a J.D. from the University of Chicago. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1928. He became an arbitrator for the National War Labor Board in 1943 and for the Wage Stabilization Board in 1946. In the post war period, Gilden served as an arbitrator for a wide range of boards, businesses, and unions, including the National Railroad Adjustment Board, Armour & Co., and the Chicago Typographical Union. He was married to Elise Byfield in 1939 and was survived by four children.
