Esther (Richman) Saperstein (1901-1988) was the first Democratic woman ever elected to the Illinois Senate (1966-1974). She also served for five terms in the Illinois House of Representatives (1956-1966) and one term as 49th Ward alderman (1974-1979). Saperstein was known as a champion of education, mental health, the rights of children, and the status of women. She was also an active leader in the cause of the Equal Rights Amendment.
