  • Collection summary Portrait of Mrs. Drucilla Carr of Miller, Indiana, standing in front of her squatter's shack, holding her granddaughter, Mayborite Nelles. The Indiana Appellate court awarded Mrs. Carr the title to 130 acres of valuable lakefront property after a four year battle with heirs of wealthy New York families, the Hitts and the Beaubiens. The land Mrs. Carr had squatted on had become valuable due to the development of Gary, Indiana.
