  • Collection summary Image of a statue of former governor of Illinois, John Peter Altgeld, located at Diversey and Lake Michigan in Lincoln Park in the Lincoln Park community area of Chicago, Illinois. The sculpture was done by Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941). The Illinois State Art Commission was not pleased with the sculpture, but they were unable to influence Governor Dunne's decision to go ahead with Borglum's design. In rebuttal, Borglum said he forgot more about sculptural art overnight than his critics knew in their entire lifetimes.
