  • Collection summary Image of William D. Heist, an attorney and pallbearer at the funeral of Mrs. Edmund M. Allen, wife of the warden of Joliet Penitentiary. A crowd surrounds the pallbearers and the flower draped coffin on the sidewalk outside of a church. An awaiting hearse is partially visible on the right side of the image. Mrs. Allen was murdered at the penitentiary. She championed an honor system for the prisoners, and some saw her murder as martyrdom for this cause. She was murdered by an African American inmate named Campbell. This image was probably taken in Joliet, Illinois.
