  • Collection summary Exterior view of a corner of the roof of the Berdix Lama Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Jehol, at the Chicago Century of Progress World's Fair of 1933-1934. The Temple was a gift to the Fair from Vincent Bendix, exposition trustee. Located at 16th Street westward from the Hall of Science (visible in the background) and just south of Soldier Field, the Temple was an exact replica of the original Chinese Lama Temple, built in 1767, and was constructed from 28,000 handcarved pieces shipped to Chicago which were then assembled and decorated. The roof was covered in 23 karat gold leaf and the cornice beams were gilded and carved with images of dragons, cats, and dogs, which are visible in this photograph.
