  • Collection summary Head and shoulders portrait of Col. Frank Knox, publisher of the Chicago Daily News, sitting in a room in Chicago, Illinois. Knox was born on January 1, 1874 in Boston, Massachusetts. Knox began in the newspaper field as a reporter, city editor, and then manager of circulation for the Grand Rapids Herald (1898-1900). He held numerous positions at various newspapers, including General Manager of Heart Newspapers, until January 1931 when he purchased controlling interest in the Chicago Daily News with Theodore Tellis, becoming publisher. He was also the President of Chicago Daily News, Inc. Knox remained publisher of the News until 1940, when he was appointed Secretary of the Navy and served until his death in 1944. Knox's military career began as one of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders in 1898. He also served overseas from May 26, 1918-February 10, 1919 with the 153rd Artillery Brigade, 78th Division. Knox also ran for vice-president of the United States in 1936 at the Republican National Convention.
