  • Collection summary Image of four hot air balloons on the ground at the International Air Races and Gordon Bennett Balloon Race sponsored by the Chicago Daily News and "The Official Competitive 'Aeronautical Event' of the Century of Progress World's Fair." The balloon race was held on September 2, 1933, from the Curtis-Wright-Keynolds Airport on Shermer Road and Lake Avenue in Glenview, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. The two U.S. enteries in the race are visible. The Goodyear IX on the right was comanded by Ward T. Van Orman and Frank A. Trotter. The balloon on the left of the Goodyear IX was the U.S. Navy balloon, under the command of Lieutenant Commander T. G. W. Settle and Lieutenant Charles H. Kendall.
