Utility poles and a fence are lining the road. An automobile full of people with a sign that says OFFICIAL posted on the windshield, is driving on the road behind the runners. Hatch is wearing a suit, tie and hat (no jacket). The race course ran from Ravinia Park in Highland Park, Illinois, to the Illinois Athletic Club headquarters at 112 South Michigan Avenue in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois.
