• Title Crown Fountain, glass brick sample, April 30, 2003
  • Description A corner brick sample viewed from three feet away. Other glass brick samples are visible in the background. The glass bricks were used with steel grids to create the exterior walls of the towers of Crown Fountain. The project team had precise specifications for the size and color of the glass bricks, and clarity was necessary as well. Although artist Jaume Plensa had found a European fabricator for the bricks, the project team wanted to use a domestic manufacturer because it would be more cost-effective. Eventually they found L.E. Smith Glass Company, of Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, a pressed-glass fabricating company that specializes in decorative objects. L.E. Smith Glass Company fabricated 22,000 five- by ten- by two-inch glass bricks for the towers of Crown Fountain.
