  • Collection summary Primarily contains views of Chicago (Ill.) published by Whitefield in 1860 and 1861. Some views were designed after earlier photographs or engravings. Includes cityscapes, street views, panoramic views, and specific or well-known sites. Views show buildings and other structures, such as hotels and railroad depots. Some views show the Chicago River or Lake Michigan waterfronts. A few street views include pedestrians. Collection also includes watercolor views of settlements along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin and Minnesota, as well as a view of the plotting out of Kansas City (Minn.). Some watercolor views include penciled notations presumably made by the artist explaining the view or for his own reference.
