  • Biographical or Historical Note Officer Martin French (1854-1929) served on the Chicago police force from 1882 to 1920 and was one of Chicago's earliest appointed African American police officers. While working as a bank security guard, French was killed on the job during a robbery in 1929 at the age of 75.
