  • Collection summary Letters, chiefly personal letters exchanged between members of the Bailhache family, particularly William and his wife, Ada Bailhache. Includes letter from Paul Selby to Bailhache about the Republican presidential nomination, June 1, 1892. Also includes May 18, 1860 letter from Bailhache to his wife expressing joy over Lincoln's 1860 nomination, "I cannot do or say anything for the very great happiness I feel in the auspicious termination of my labors and those who worked with me."
  • Biographical or Historical Note Bailhache was an Illinois journalist; born Chillicothe (Ohio); died Coronado (Calif.). Owner and manager of Illinois State Journal, Springfield (Ill.); Abraham Lincoln granted him a commission when the Civil War broke out. He was made Captain and Assistant Quartermaster, U.S. Volunteers. There is a family relationship between the Bailhache, Brayman, and Starring families.
