Includes Bryan Lathrop letter, 1892 Feb. 4, accepting Scott's resignation from the board of the society for prevention of smoke; Lyman Gage letter 1892 Feb. 8, refusing the presidency of the exposition corporation; Bertha H. Palmer letter, 1893 Oct. 25, requesting a newspaper notice, and a George B. Swift letter, 1893 Nov. 22, thanking Scott for newspaper support. Also present are resolutions in memoriam of Scott adopted by the Board of Directors of the exposition and by the members of the Columbian Director's Association (1 v., 28 p.), by the Chicago Board of Education (1 v., 26 p.), by the New York Press Club (2 p.), by the Publishers of St. Paul (1 p., oversize), and by the Chicago Daily Newspaper Association (1 p., oversize). The illuminated resolutions in 2 volumes were created by artist and calligrapher C.L. Ricketts of Chicago.

  • Biographical or Historical Note James W. Scott was born in Wisconsin and was raised in Galena (Ill.). He was best known as the publisher and business manager of the Chicago Times-Herald and the Chicago Evening Post. He was a patron of the arts and was instrumental in assuring that the World's Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago. His sudden death from apoplexy shocked the Chicago community in April 1895.
