  • Collection summary Photographs primarily of Armin F. Hand, bandleader; his Chicago Board of Trade band; and other bands and events. Also includes portraits of celebrities Bing Crosby, Jack Dempsey, Marlene Dietrich, Burgess Meredith, Paulette Goddard, and "Schoolboy" Rowe. Includes band performances at the New York world's fair (1939) and other fairs, the World Series and other sporting events, especially in Chicago; holiday parades, stadiums, as well as in concert. Also included are autographs presented to Hand, photographs of his band both playing and posed, announcements and advertisements relating to the band, and 2 albums/scrapbooks containing photographs, news clippings, and programs. These events take place in various parts of the United States. Early materials relate to Armin's father, John A. Hand and his band (known as Johnny Hand's Band and as Hand's Band) and his association with John Philip Sousa at Great Lakes Naval Training Station.
