  • Collection summary Interview with Ann Chapin Compondu about her jobs at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, when she was 18 years old. She was assigned first the role of "beautiful Italian girl" and stood outside the Days of Pompeii exhibit with the barker; later she became one of the "Forty Foreign Beauties" at the fair and sold souvenirs from France at booths in the manufacturers building. Actually, she grew up in Chicago in the vicinity of Harrison and Halsted Streets. Interview was conducted by Charles J. Shields in 1966 after he read a newspaper article about Compondu's 90th birthday in 1965.
