  • Collection summary Images of hoisting machinery manufactured by the Hoover and Mason Company, including views of ships unloading cargo with dockside cranes and other machinery and workmen plus several views of men posing in front of machines that move stone and ore (images labeled with model numbers and "Hamacher"). Names of ships visible in some images include the John A. Roebling from Duluth, the John Fritz, the Arthur Orr, and the Superior City. Labels include: "Back of H&M one-coke-limestone pockets large roller delivering feed-operated by friction drive taking power from countershaft scale car operator-operated cam." Several views are at the North Dock of Illinois Steel Company in South Chicago (Ill.); some views at Toledo Furnace Company (Toledo, Ohio), at Lorain, Ohio; and at Ashtabula, Ohio. Includes first gravity bucket handling ore, "the start of H&M's ore operations." H&M maintained offices in the New York Life Building in Kansas City, Missouri, and in the Old Colony Building in Chicago (Ill.).
