  • Collection summary Correspondence, minutes, financial information, tax information, report cards, and investment information among other materials relating to James Rankin Getz, son of wealthy Chicago coal baron George F. Getz. James Getz was educated at the University of Chicago Elementary School, the Choate School, and Yale University before he followed in his father's footsteps as treasurer of the Globe Coal Company. He continued to be active as a trustee of the Choate School and was active on the boards of the Chicago Zoological Society, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Illinois State Historical Society, the Lake County Historical Society, the Chicago Historical Society, Lake Forest Hospital, and Lake County Municipal League. He was one of the founders and a village president of Mettawa (Ill.). In addition to his work on various boards in the Chicago area he carried out research on archeology and history, especially in northern Illinois. The collection highlights his educational experiences, his financial records, and his service and philanthropies to various institutions throughout the Chicago area.
