  • Collection summary Includes copies of newspaper and publication clippings regarding Chicago liberal activist, war veteran, organizer and publisher John Rossen. Folder one contains clippings regarding Rossen's initial trial and response to racism and government control in St. Louis and Chicago, and articles published in the "SDS New Left Notes," the "Chicago Reader," and "Perspective" from 1968-1990. Also includes clippings regarding demonstrations organized in several Midwestern states by Rossen, often under the pseudonym "Johnny Appleseed". Folder two contains copies of the Rossen publication "Maverick," advertised as the "World's Liveliest Labor Paper," published in Chicago (Ill.) from May 1959 to February 1960. Folder three contains copies of the Rossen publication, "The New Patriot," from Chicago (Ill.) and published from July 1970 through 1976. Folder four contains several congressional and labor forum pamphlets, and three books published by Rossen's firm. These include Joe Holland's "Flag, Faith and Family: Rooting the American Left in Everyday Symbols" (1979), Regis Debray's "Marxism and the National Question" (1980), and Ken Keys Jr.'s "The Hundredth Monkey" (1982). It also includes a small book authored and published by Johnny Appleseed Rossen in 1969, entitled, "The Little Red White and Blue Book, Revolutionary Quotations by Great Americans." Also included is a transcript of an interview with Rossen from Marge Witty's doctoral dissertation.
