  • Collection summary Images relating to the life and journalism career of Esther Pauline Lederer, famous as the nationally syndicated advice columnist "Ann Landers." Includes 5 scrapbooks and many publicity portrait photographs of Lederer at public speaking engagements and parties, as well as photographs of Lederer with members of her family, including Jules Lederer (her husband of 36 years), their daughter Margo Howard, and her sister Pauline Phillips (who authored an advice column under the pen name of Abigail Van Buren). Includes scrapbooks of photographs related to the Lederers' costume parties in Eau Claire (Wis.) in 1948 and 1951; a party by the Lederers in Aug. 1968 related to the Democratic National Convention; and Armand Hammer's 89th birthday celebration at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, 1987. Includes views of Landers in her condominium apartment at 209 East Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and views of members of her office staff.
  • Biographical or Historical Note Esther Pauline Lederer (b. 1918; nee Friedman; nicknamed Eppie) became the advice columnist Ann Landers in 1954 for the Chicago Sun-Times. Her column's topics included sexuality, marital roles and family relationships, divorce, drugs and alcoholism, and ethical issues. It eventually was syndicated in over 1100 newspapers. In 1987, she left the Sun-Times, taking the column with her to the Chicago Tribune, where she remained its primary author until 2000.
