  • Collection summary Photographs related to the Angel Guardian Orphanage. Includes snapshots and professional portraits. The snapshots show children, nuns, and teachers as well as various activities, such as playtime, graduation, Christmas, birthdays, weddings, and other church related activities. The portraits are mostly typical student portraits of children that lived at the orphanage.
  • Biographical or Historical Note Angel Guardian Orphanage was located at 2001 W. Devon Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago (Ill.). Founded in 1865 by five German Roman Catholic parishes to help preserve the German cultural heritage of their needy children. In 1916 the orphanage switched to a cottage system in which small groups of children shared a single living space and dining facility. The orphanage closed in 1974. The site at 6300 North Ridge Avenue passed to Misericordia Home.
