  • Collection summary Photographs, nearly all by Mildred Mead, a photographer for the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council, showing neighborhoods in Chicago (Ill.) targeted by the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council for urban renewal. The photographs depict slum conditions, homes in revitalized areas (including homes operated by the Chicago Housing Authority), and other aspects of community life in Chicago, including churches and parishioners, schools, street markets, parades, road construction, newly integrated communities, and children at play. Community areas represented by many images in the collection include: Englewood, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Near West Side, Near North Side, and New City. Market streets areas include Fulton Street Market (fish), Randolph Street Market, South Water Market (produce), Wood Street Terminal "Potato Yard," Maxwell Street Market and nearby areas.
