  • Collection summary Letters (originals and photocopies), photoprints, notes, and printed items relating to the first oil painting of Abraham Lincoln (painted from life), which was completed by artist Thomas Hicks in Springfield (Ill.) on June 13, 1860. Includes letters by Thomas Hicks, William E. Marshall, and O.H. Browning on the circumstances of the portrait and its likeness to Lincoln; plus letters on the sale of the portrait by Mrs. Herbert Shipman to Bernon S. Prentice in 1940.
  • Acquisition information This documentation was purchased by Chicago Historical Society from the Cintas Foundation, Inc., in 1963 after the Chicago Historical Society acquired the Hicks portrait through the will of Oscar B. Cintas (M1963.0430).
