  • Collection summary Framed black-and-white photographic print copy of an original tintype portrait of John G. Shortall when he arrived in Chicago around 1856-1857. Shortall was born in 1837 (or 1838, reports vary) in Dublin, Ireland. He settled in Chicago and became an advocate for the humane treatment of animals. In 1869, he co-founded the Illinois Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to animals and in 1877 helped with the creation of and served as president of the American Humane Society (originally known as the International Humane Association and the American Humane Association).
