  • Collection summary Interview of Rose Ida Lindrup (nee Schneider), a German American native of Chicago who married John Allan Lindrup, a Norwegian native who was editor and part-owner of two Norwegian-language newspapers in Chicago (the "Skandinavian" and the "Viking") from the 1930s until his death in 1958. Rose Lindrup discusses her own work as a librarian at the Humboldt branch of the Chicago Public Library in the 1920s, the annual Norwegian-American parade on North Avenue every May 17, the Norwegian men's singing society (of which her husband was a member), her husband's newspaper work, and the dispersal of Chicago's West Side Norwegian community to the northern suburbs in the years following World War II. She also discusses the effects of the Great Depression on her community (she remembers a mounted machine gun atop a building which overlooked a community relief center) and her husband's service in the post office for the government during World War II, scanning Scandinavian-language letters for intelligence.
