  • Access and usage restrictions To examine the tintype, it is necessary to make an advance appointment by email to Research@chicagohistory.org or by U.S. mail to the Research Center. Tintypes may be handled only by conservation staff of Chicago History Museum.
  • Collection summary Group and individual photographic portraits of Dow family, friends, businesses, and travels; snapshots, scenic views, building exteriors, and shop interiors. Many of the photographs have handwritten descriptions on the back. People shown include Josephine M. Dow, George B. Dow, Dorothy Dow, Jane the "nurse girl," and other members of the Dow family in California, Chicago (Ill.), and the Philippines. Collection includes a 1922 Corps of Cadets U.S.M.A. Christmas card; a stereograph card of a riverboat scene on the Coos River in Oregon; and a picture of an Asian woman holding one of the Dow children, dated 1906. One postcard is post-marked and addressed to Mrs. Theodore E. Dow in National City, California. Also included are several images of George B. Dow's player piano shop, at 336-338 W. Sixty-Third Street, Near Harvard Ave., and George J. Birkel's Music Rooms, 1050 and 1052 Fourth St., San Diego.
  • Biographical or Historical Note Daniel R. Williams and Josephine Dow Williams were teacher and later assistant principal of Manila Normal School ca. 1892-1916.
