  • Biographical or Historical Note James E. Stamps (1890-1972) attended Fisk University in Nashville (Tenn.), Yale University in New Haven (Conn.), and was awarded an M.A. in 1932 from Northwestern University (Evanston, Ill.). He was an economist by profession and was appointed social security administrator for Illinois in 1937. He was very active in promoting fundraising for the United Negro College Fund, served on the board of directors for the South Side Boys Club, was a trustee of Roosevelt University, and a board member of the Joint Negro Appeal.
