  • Collection summary Correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, meeting minutes, and other papers of Lawrence Jacques, a Chicago surgeon. Dr. Jacques was a faculty member at the Northwestern University Medical School and worked at South Shore, Edgewater, and Bethany Brethren Hospitals. Materials include correspondence from Northwestern University Medical School, Jacques publications, and articles from the Journal of American Medical Association. Also included are documents from the Chicago Medical Society and the Civic Medical Center of Chicago, one of the first private group practice prepayment clinics in the country, of which Jacques was founder and chairman. In addition are documents related to the Republic Steel Company Memorial Day shootings in 1937, where Jacques treated injured striking workers, testified before a coroner's jury, and presented his findings to the U.S. Senate Civil Liberties Committee.
