  • Collection summary
    • Business and personal papers of the Otis family of Chicago (Ill.), which made its fortune in nineteenth-century business real estate. Present are building management files of Frederick R. Otis and his son Charles Tillinghast Otis, owners of prominent retail properties in the Loop (State Street) and near South Side (22nd Street), including correspondence, rent receipts, and contracts exchanged with Henry C. Lytton at the Hub Building (northwest corner of State and Jackson); receipts for building materials and labor used on various Otis properties; tax receipts; and legal correspondence pertaining to injuries suffered on the Otis properties.
    • Also present are approximately 500 letters dating from the 1870s through the 1930s, received by F.R. Otis, his wife, their daughters Margarette Otis and Gertrude (Mrs. H.H. Deming), and their son Lucius J. Otis (mainly received from relatives and friends, discussing social and travel news); and a scrapbook compiled upon the death of F.R. Otis (1903), which includes genealogical charts, typed reminiscences by his wife, photographs of family members and of Chicago buildings owned by the Otis family, telegrams and letters of sympathy received upon F.R. Otis's death, and cards from floral displays at the funeral. Box 7 contains a scrapbook with letters, photographs, and miscellaneous documents.
