  • Collection summary Black-and-white photographic prints, cabinet cards, and tintype depicting the Mandel family and friends. Includes images of Florence, Louise (Mrs. Joseph M. Wineman), Irma, Blanche, Leon and Isabella Mandel, among others. Some prints contain annotations, but many are unidentified.

  • Biographical or Historical Note The Mandel family is connected to the Mandel Brothers Department Store, founded on Clark Street in Chicago in 1855 by Solomon Mandel and his uncle, Simon Klein. Solomon's brothers Leon and Emanuel partnered in the business in 1865, and it became known as Mandel Bros. The final Mandel Bros. store closed in the 1970s.
