  • Collection summary Collection of samples of knapsack library compilations made by Mrs. Marwick of Glencoe, Ill.; instructions to assist others in assembling more of them; and letters of appreciation from American military service men and women who received these mini-libraries during World War II. The sample packets consist of magazine serials (many clipped from The Saturday Evening Post) conveniently bound together, plus poems, cartoons, pin-up girls, etc., ca. 1943 and placed in a cover showing a soldier reading in a foxhole, plus a printed sheet from Mrs. Marwick offering suggestions on how to assemble a knapsack library to be sent to U.S. soldiers. The letters (115 items, 1942-1946) present a cross-section of military life from people in various branches of service (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Merchant Marine, Army Nurse Corps, Woman's Army Corps) and represented all ranks from private to general and many theaters of operations.
