  • Biographical or Historical Note The Englewood Woman's Club was organized in 1896 and its first president was Frances Stuart Parker. Also in 1896, the club incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois and joined the General Federation of Woman's Club and the Illinois Federation of Woman's Clubs. One year later, the club became a member of the Cook County League. The purpose of the Englewood Woman's Club as defined in Article II of its By-laws, "Shall be social intercourse and the promotion of the highest interest of humanity through Sociological, Literary, Educational, Art, and Music work." Membership was limited to 650 paid members, "exclusive of Honorary, Non-resident and Junior members." Meetings were held at 673-6738 Wentworth Avenue every Monday afternoon.

  • Access and usage restrictions Available for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room of the Chicago Public Library.
  • Acquisition information The records of the Englewood Woman's Club were accessioned by the Chicago Public Library during the period 1915 through 1931 and located in the Library's Reference Department. During the renovation of the Cultural Center in the 1970s, many of the Library's early accessions were transferred to the Records Storage Center. After the creation of the Special Collections Division in 1976, the material was again transferred; this time, becoming the responsibility of the Special Collections Division. In January 1985 the material was added to the Neighborhood History Research Collection and combined with materials from the Englewood Community Collection to form the Records of the Englewood Woman's Club.
