  • Collection arrangement Where possible the original order has been maintained. The records are arranged into six series: Papers of the Press/Deputy Press Secretary; Press Clippings; Press Releases; Executive Orders, Proclamations, Requests; Schedules and Briefing Notes; and Speeches.

  • Collection summary The records in this collection were created by Mayor Washington's Press Secretary, the Deputy Press Secretary and their staffs and reflect the daily activities of the Press Office. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, press clippings, press releases, executive orders and proclamations, information on Mayor Washington's schedules, and his speeches. Of particular note are the collection of speeches given by Harold Washington and the collection of news clippings gathered after Washington's sudden death in 1987.

  • Biographical or Historical Note Harold Washington was the first African American mayor of Chicago, elected in 1983. He died in office on November 25, 1987, not long after beginning his second term. Grayson Mitchell was Washington's first Press Secretary from 1983 until January 1985. Alton Miller succeeded Mitchell and served until Washington's death in November 1987. The Press Office was responsible for the mayor's scheduling and for preparing speeches and press releases for him.
