  • Biographical or Historical Note Founded in 1982 as a venue for Chicago theater artists producing new work, Stage Left redefined its mission in 1988 to produce plays that raise the level of debate on political and social issues. As the company evolved, it initiated outreach programming for students in Chicago area schools. In 1995-1996, "Downstage Left" was developed to create works that provide novel, quality performance experiences that address the company's mission; encourage its style to evolve; challenge traditional forms; and introduce new artists and ideas to the company.
