Eleanor Frances Dolan was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 30, 1907, the daughter of Harry Francis Roby and Lillie Eleanor (McFall) Dolan. Eleanor F. Dolan received her B.A. (1927) from Wellesley College and her M.A. (1928) and Ph. D. (1935) from Radcliffe College. She served as a Carnegie Scholar before accepting political science teaching positions at Florida State College for Women from 1938 until 1939, and New York University from 1939 until 1941. In 1941, Dr. Dolan became a professor of government and the dean of Flora Stone Mather College for Women of Western Reserve University, positions she held until 1950 when she joined the national staff of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). In 1967, Dr. Dolan joined the federal government as the Specialist for Higher Education -- Graduate Academic Programs in the Bureau of Higher Education, her major responsibility being Northeastern graduate schools where much early work for women took place. After retiring from the Bureau of Higher Education in 1975, Dr. Dolan was a volunteer on the national staff of the International Women's Year, from 1975 until 1976, writing part of their final report. In addition, she served as executive secretary of the National Council of Administrative Women in Education from 1975 until 1977, writing and editing their quarterly publication. In 1984, Dr. Dolan and Dorothy M. Gropp compiled The Mature Woman in America: a selected annotated bibliography, 1979-1982, published by the National Council on the Aging: Washington, D.C. During her lifetime, Dr. Dolan regularly participated in many national and local organizations for women and was a founder of Women's Equity Action League (WEAL). She resided in Alexandria, Virginia, until her death on January 12, 1987.
  • Collection summary The Eleanor F. Dolan Collection dates from 1912 to 1993 and reflects her active concern for women, particularly women in higher education. International in scope, the material is often ephemeral in nature and includes letters, reports, newspaper articles, periodicals, addresses, bibliographies, and sample publications relating to women. In Dr. Dolan's own words, " ... this collection covers the development of the women's movement and the status of women over the last 20/30 years." Although the material covers primarily the period from the 1950s to 1986, there are occasional items which date earlier.
